About Medical Laboratory Sciences

Those who have careers in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) enjoy a creative profession combining the challenges and rewards of both medicine and science. MLS is an ideal career choice if you have an aptitude and interest in science and mathematics, and also want to care for others.

Medical laboratory scientists possess sharp analytical skills, working calmly and quickly under pressure. They are vital health care team members who provide scientific analysis of blood, body fluids and tissues. They work in hospitals, clinics, physicians offices’ laboratories and reference laboratories. MLS degree holders also work in public health roles, forensics, research, sales and marketing and education.

The NIU MLS Mission

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Sciences program at Northern Illinois University is to prepare medical laboratory scientists with knowledge, skills and professional attitudes that are required for fulfillment of leadership roles in the health care team. The program faculty is committed to contributing to the knowledge base in medical laboratory sciences by research, publication and service. Program goals align with School of Health Studies and NIU baccalaureate goals.

Graduates of the MLS program are strongly encouraged to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Medical Laboratory Sciences (ASCP BOC MLS) exam.
