Hospitality and Tourism Management is the business of helping people make the most of their leisure time. It could be running a five-star hotel, managing the catering operations of a sports stadium, planning large-scale events, coordinating conventions or directing activities on a cruise ship, the hospitality and tourism industry is vast and global.
According to SelectUSA.gov, the U.S. travel and tourism industry generated nearly $1.6 trillion in economic output in 2015 and supported 7.6 million jobs. In Illinois, travel expenditures directly supported 306,040 jobs in 2014, according to the Illinois Governor’s Conference on Travel & Tourism. Illinois ranks fifth in the nation for travel spending. And, employment in the restaurant and food service industry represents 1 of 9 Illinois jobs.
The hospitality and tourism industry includes a wide variety of business sectors such as hotels, resorts, casinos, food and beverage, meeting, event, convention, tradeshow, travel and tourism, cruises and theme parks. And, the career outlook is excellent. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the employment of meeting, convention and event planners is expected to grow 33 percent by 2022.
