Dietetic Internship
Welcome! The NIU Dietetic Internship Program (DI) provides students the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of medical nutrition therapy, food service management, life-cycle nutrition and community nutrition with a concentration in Community Nutrition and Health Promotion.
In our program, students also work to earn a Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Being located in northern Illinois, many excellent dietitians/preceptors practice in diverse settings from the DeKalb and Rockford area to the surrounding suburbs as well as in the larger metropolitan area of Chicago.
Highlights of the Dietetic Internship program at NIU
- Designed for simultaneous completion of both the Dietetic Internship (DI) and Master of Science (MS) program.
- Includes opportunities for a FULL TUITION waiver. Interns may apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) which provides both a tuition wavier and monetary stipend. Additional opportunities exist during the Supervised Practice courses.
- Dedicated to the Community Nutrition and Health Promotion concentration, allowing the opportunity to rotate with a large variety of community programs. Interns will work with approximately 12 community sites during the internship including medical clinics, school nutrition programs, wellness and health promotion sites, diabetes education and business sites throughout northern Illinois.
- Supports success. Our Registration Exam for Registered Dietitians first time pass rate for the past five years is 96%; the past three years is 100%, which is well above the National pass rate of 83%.
- Highlights study in current issues. The Certificate of Graduate Study in Eating Disorders and Obesity (EDOC) is also available on a competitive basis.
Important Criminal Background Check Information
Effective December 14th, 2012, the Office of Teacher Certification and NIU Security will no longer be processing Background Checks for the College of Health and Human Sciences. New instructions can be found by clicking the hyperlink. The College of Health and Human Sciences requires both Illinois State Police and F.B.I. background checks.
