Program Goals and Outcomes

The following are the NIU DI program goals with expected outcome and target measures. In parentheses are the current 5 year actual outcomes.

To prepare individuals at the graduate level who are competent to practice in the profession of nutrition and dietetics upon program completion. 

  • Within one year of completing the internship program, at least 90% of program graduates will take the examination. (NIU currently 97%)
  • Over a five-year summary period, the first-time pass rate for graduates who take the registration exam will be at least 85%. (NIU currently 96%)
  • Over a 5-year period, 80% of graduates who sought employment in dietetics will be employed within 3 months of program completion. (NIU currently 95%)
  • Eighty percent (80%) of employer surveys will report that interns have the necessary skills to practice as competent practitioners. (NIU currently 100%)
  • Eighty percent (80%) of program alumni will report being adequately prepared for professional practice. (NIU currently 95%)

To prepare capable entry-level dietitians for productive employment in a community nutrition and/or health promotion setting. Data not available yet.

  • Over a 5-year period, fifty percent (50%) of program alumni will report employment in a community nutrition/health promotion within one year of program completion.
  • Eighty percent (80%) of program alumni working in the community will report being adequately prepared for practice. 
  • Eighty percent (80%) of employer surveys will report that interns have the necessary skills to practice as competent practitioners in the community setting.

The program will coordinate graduate course work with supervised practice experience to result in simultaneous completion of the DI and M.S. degree.

  • Eighty percent (80%) of internship graduates will complete all M.S. degree program requirements at the same time as the DI completion. (NIU currently 68%)
  • Ninety percent (90%) of internship graduates will complete the Dietetic Internship and all M.S. degree program within forty-five (45) months of program admission (150%). (NIU currently 95%)
