Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS)
The MLS Program at NIU has a >90% pass rate on the BOC exam and >90% employment rate as an MLS upon graduating from the program. Graduates of the MLS program are strongly encouraged to sit for the ASCP BOC MLS exam.
The profession of Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS), formerly known as Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) and Medical Technology (MT), provides invaluable information through the performance and evaluation of scientific analysis of blood, other body fluids and tissues in a clinical (most often, medical) laboratory.
Medical Laboratory Science, is a creative, science-based profession that is critical to the maintenance of health and to the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. It combines the challenges and rewards of both medicine and science. The profession attracts women and men who have an interest and aptitude in science and mathematics, who exhibit caring for others, and who wish to assume full responsibility for their work. Medical Laboratory Scientists are able to think logically and work accurately, quickly, and calmly under pressure. Their analytical expertise and interpretative assistance makes them vital team members as they interact with physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and patients and their families toward good health.
MLS Mission Statement
The mission of the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program at Northern Illinois University is to prepare medical laboratory scientists with knowledge, skills and professional attitudes that are required for fulfillment of leadership roles in the health care team. The program faculty is committed to contributing to the knowledge base in medical laboratory sciences by research, publication and service. Program goals align with School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders and NIU baccalaureate goals.
