Couple and Family Therapy Clinic Patient Expectations

Your first visit to the Couple and Family Therapy Clinic (CFTC) usually takes 75-90 minutes. Your therapist will meet with you to become acquainted and to learn about the concerns that bring you to therapy. The therapist also will provide you with information about therapy and set your fee per session.

After you meet with your therapist, you will complete questionnaires that assist us with assessment, help us to get to know you better and enable us to track the progress of therapy. You should be able to complete the questionnaires in about 45-60 minutes.

The fee for the first session is $5. The fee for subsequent sessions will be determined with your therapist at your first session. The clinic uses a sliding scale based on income and family size to set your per session fee. Please bring your W-2 or other proof of income (e.g. Bursar statement, pay stub) to your first session.

The Couple and Family Therapy Clinic is a training center for the next generation of couple and family therapists. Your student-therapist is closely supervised by the faculty of the Specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy Program who have extensive experience as both therapists and supervisors. Each session in the clinic is recorded and may be reviewed in supervision for the growth of the therapist and to ensure quality treatment. In addition, live sessions may be observed by the supervisor and/or by our student-therapists. These are the best methods of supervision for the growth of the student-therapist.

The CFTC also is a research facility. We use your client questionnaires to evaluate the effectiveness of our therapy and to discern the ways that therapy will be especially effective for our clients. The confidentiality of all client information is rigorously protected.

At times, therapy can be a challenging and painful process. It is challenging to make significant changes in ourselves and our relationships. It isn’t easy to face our hurts, losses, difficult decisions or personal limitations. Our therapists and supervisors always have your best interests at heart and are committed to providing you with the very best care for yourself, your family and/or your important relationships.
