Undergraduate Advising

Within the college, special emphasis is placed on the advising of students. Academic advisors are available at both the college and department levels to help students explore academic options and career goals. Academic advisors in the college office assist freshman, sophomore, and pre-majors in exploring HHS majors & minors, understanding program admission criteria, reviewing general education requirements, and course planning. Junior and Senior declared majors are to seek advising through their department office.

Freshmen, Sophomores, and Pre-majors can call the office at 815-753-1891 to set up an academic advising appointment.

Student Responsibilities in the Academic Advising Process

Ultimately, responsibility for a student's academic progress rests with the individual student. It is the student's responsibility to:

  • Read and use NIU's Undergraduate Catalog
  • Know the requirements of his or her particular academic program
  • Monitor his or her academic progress
  • Seek advising from appropriate advisers at appropriate times
  • Schedule and keep advising appointments in a timely manner
  • Be prepared for advising sessions

Manage Your Academic Records!

Keep a folder with all of your NIU records: Transfer evaluations, DARS reports, grade reports, advisor notes.
