Preselect for Current NIU Students

Northern Illinois University Dietetic Internship program offers a preselect option for a maximum of 6 slots. These slots are reserved for first semester senior NIU Nutrition and Dietetics students who wish to continue their education at NIU and complete the dietetic internship after May graduation.

Who:

Qualified NIU Nutrition and Dietetic seniors who wish to complete a graduate degree and have an interest in Community Nutrition and Health Promotion.

When:

The application and admission process will be conducted during the fall semester of senior year. The application deadline is November 1st of each year. Applicants will be notified of acceptance in early December. Applicants not admitted through the preselect option are still eligible to participate in the spring match cycle. 

Students who are accepted for a preselect Spot MAY NOT participate in the spring match cycle. Full acceptance is conditional on maintaining cumulative and major GPAs, graduation and DPD verification. Once accepted into the preselect, students must apply to Graduate School by the deadline to start both the internship and Graduate School the following fall.

How:

Paper copies of the application form, letters of recommendation, official transcripts from all schools attended including NIU, GRE scores, career statement, DPD Intent to Graduate form, major GPA worksheet and application fee must be turned in by the deadline to the Internship Director, Nancy Prange, MS,RD,LDN.

Requirements:

  • a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75/4.0
  • a minimum major GPA of 3.3/4.0 
  • a minimum science GPA of 2.75/4.0
  • satisfactory GRE scores are required 
  • 150 hours of dietetics related work experience
  • applicants should have no more than 9 credit hours remaining in DPD courses for Spring
  • active in Student Dietetic Association (SDA) preferred
